All About Chihuahuas

by Kaitlyn Hennessy on March 13, 2024

The world's smallest dog breed, by definition, is beloved by many and oddly hated by some. These pint sized pooches are loyal and usually "one person" dogs, faithfully following their owners everywhere. Velcro dog, anyone?

I was first introduced to chihuahuas by a dear friend of mine who rescued them by the dozen, it seemed- and found all of them amazing homes. I fell in love with them when I realized how immensely loyal and courageous they are.

Many know that they are from the Mexican state of Chihuahua, but did you know they originated from the ancient Aztec and Toltec civilizations? They held spiritual significance- it was believed that how a person treated a chihuahua affected their journey to the afterlife.

They are VERY intelligent dogs, which surprises many people. They were originally watch dogs, so they are incredibly observant and tend to get bored. One of mine creates her own enrichment activities when she isn't stimulated by moving toys or shoes or other lightweight objects around- never trying to destroy them- but "organizing" them.

Due to their small size, many people mistake them for toys, but they have the same mental stimulation needs that larger dogs do, which makes small dog enrichment toys even more important.

Millions of chihuahuas are just waiting in shelters everyday for their special home- they are beautiful dogs with quirky personalities. Not sure one is right for you? Volunteer to foster for a local rescue!
