Is Your Dog Bored with Their Bowl?

by Kaitlyn Hennessy on January 12, 2025

If every meal you feed your dog uses one of these you’re more likely to have a dog that doesn’t get bored, and of course I’m talking about snuffle mats and enrichment bowls

Both snuffle mats and enrichment bowls mimic a dogs natural foraging instincts- which reduces their stress. When a dog doesn’t have anything to do, they get into "stuff".

The longer you can keep your dog eating, the less time he has to get into your trash can.

They also forces your dog to eat slower, which means less risk of choking, bloat, or digestive issues.

Snuffle Mats

It’s really simple to get started with them. With a snuffle mat, start with the most high value treat you have for your dog.

What is a high value treat? That’s the treat they love the most in this world- for my dogs, right now they are loving snacks that came in October's box.

First, put a larger piece of the treat on top of the mat to make it as easy as possible, and allow your dog to find that- then gradually make it more difficult by burying the treat deeper and making the treat smaller, each time allowing your dog to find the treat on his own.

If this is too difficult, make the treat bigger again or bring it closer to the surface.

A lot of times dogs give up because owners rush this process, but you are guaranteed success if you methodically introduce the snuffle mat.

After they are used to it, you can start feeding them their kibble in it!

Enrichment Bowls

Enrichment bowls are perfect for any kind of dog food, you can start by feeding some high value treats in the bowl before feeding time.

Then, begin to feed part of your dog’s meal in the bowl- if they are reluctant, add a few treats in the food- to encourage them more, split their food into two parts and give the portion in the enrichment bowl before the regular bowl.

If you feed kibble and they try to flip the bowl, first try putting it on a non slip mat.

You can also try adding a small amount of peanut butter with the kibble to make it stick to the bottom of the bowl, and freezing it will also help.

With these quick tips, you can keep your dog busy and out of trouble!
