Keeping Small Dogs Warm

by Kaitlyn Hennessy on September 16, 2022

One struggle that us small dog owners have is keeping them warm, even in hot weather months, these pint sized pooches can be desperate to stay in what seems like unbearable heat. I recall a particularly nasty heat wave years ago- during which my black chihuahua was sunning and I couldn't even stand outside! In order to keep their core temperature safely up, we've experimented with many methods and have jotted down a few of our favorites!

Blankets

Keeping a nice supply of safe (no knit, please! It can catch their toe nails) dog blankets is the first step in keeping your dog warm. We have found that having a supply of 3-4 fleece blankets with a heavier nap seems to do the trick, and then we rotate them out for washing.

Heated Blankets

You need to be careful with these (fire hazards and all that jazz) and use only with supervision (and definitely not with a chewer), but these can be the holy grail for the right dog and situation- always provide a non heated blanket next to it so they can easily regulate their temperature, and start on a low setting. For older dogs, this can be a great way to keep their temperature up and allow them to self regulate.

Hot Water Bottle

If a heated blanket makes you nervous, or you don't want to run cords, this can be a great shorter term option. I have been known to bury it under a blanket to give the dog a nice warm place to cuddle up to. Pro tip: don't fill it all the way, it makes it easier for the dog to cuddle around it and on it if it's got some give to it.

Dog Sweaters

Some dogs love 'em, some dogs hate 'em. We've found them to be effective with dogs that accept them readily, and buy fleece casual ones that we can easily throw in the wash. However, if your dog doesn't like wearing clothes, they are not worth the hassle. Make sure you use them with supervision- especially super tiny dogs that curl into balls can get their paws stuck and not be able to move.

Space Heaters

If it's REALLY cold out, this can be a better option than whole house heat for a dog- you aren't forcing hot air into the room (possibly drying airways) and your dog can self regulate better than with forced air. If your dog is getting hot, they can easily move away. As always, follow the manufacturers recommendations for safe usage.

Radiant Panel Heaters

If you're looking for something that's a bit more pet safe, check out the panel heater. It's even made for use with pets, so much less of a hazard.'
