Picking the Best Dog Toys

by Kaitlyn Hennessy on September 11, 2022

You're at the store and looking at the long aisle of dog toys wondering which one will keep your dog busy and not be instantly destroyed- we've all been there. Toys fall into several categories and picking the perfect toy largely depends on your dog's personality.

If you have multiple toy oriented dogs you want to make sure you have enough toys so they don't fight.

Some dogs love to possess toys more than destroy them. In the small dog category, we've found that chihuahuas in particular have this fascination.

The first thing to consider is size. Depending on your dog's size, you want to make sure they can comfortably carry the toy, but that it also not so small that they can choke on it if they get it stuck in their mouth. Too large of a toy can cause problems with the weight or being able to play with it without getting injured.

Plush Toys

Probably the most popular, pick toys that have different textures or shapes. Do the toys have squeakers or other sound makers (some can crinkle, others have a honking sound)? Think about your lifestyle too with loud toys- if you spend your dogs on zoom calls and are trying to keep your dog busy in the same room, that squeaking can be better reserved for non-work times.  Depending on your dog's activity level, these toys can last a long time or need to be retired- try to cycle them to keep your dog entertained.

Rubber Toys

Toys made by companies like Kong offer an interactive and stimulating chewing experience. Even if your dog isn't a big chewer, these toys can be great for keeping your dog busy because they can lick the treat out from the inside. This can be great for dogs suffering from boredom, separation anxiety, chewing, or needing to be occupied for any reason.

Balls

The typical tennis ball is way too large for our petite pups, but many companies offer hard or soft squeezable versions in a petite size. Make sure that if they get damaged you replace them immediately so the dog doesn't choke on any components (this is true for all toys!).

Ropes/Woven Toys

These are great for dogs who love chewing on different textures, make sure that the dog can safely carry this toy in particular and that the rope isn't beginning to shred.  If so, it's time for a new one!

With all of these toys, the most important thing is that they are the correct size for your dog, that your dog enjoys them, and that they stay intact. Think of toys as a limited use item for your dog and don't be afraid to replace them the moment that they begin to fray or are compromised.  Always monitor your dog, especially with a new toy- once I discovered a seemingly safe toy was having its limbs removed by one of our dogs and creating a choking hazard!

Make sure you sign up for Bits and Paws, which will provide your petite pooch with a supply of new, safe toys in different textures, styles, and provide new mental stimulation each and every month!
