Decrease Boredom with Variety in Doggie Playtime

by Kaitlyn Hennessy on August 26, 2024

Giving your dog a life filled with mental enrichment means giving them variety in all aspects of play.

Dogs are neophiliacs- meaning they love new experiences and toys over ones they already know. So keeping things fresh and new for them helps them to experience the world in a different way- it's enrichment made easy!

Research shows that dogs lose interest in a toy in as little as 30 seconds, which means those toys that have been in their toy baskets collecting dust for months (or even years) need to be rotated out. Have no fear, simply putting the toys in different baskets so you can easily rotate them out every day or week can make all the difference.

Dogs also maintain more interest in enrichment toys- toys that are designed to reward them for engaging with them. It makes sense- if the toy gives your dog a way to engage with it easily, your dog will return to it again and again.

If you always use the same kind of treats, try changing it up. Our boxes allow you to try a new kind of small batch, natural treats every month. Dogs can get bored- even with their favorite treats. If they are working out the enrichment toys too quickly, try using two kinds of treats in the toy, or a less enticing treat in the toy. If they are struggling to see the "point" in the enrichment toy, make sure you are using their absolute favorite treat!

What time of day do you play with your dogs? Sometimes, routine is great! But if they are expecting it after dinner everyday so they do nothing the rest of the day, try mixing it up with a short play session before breakfast!

Speaking of, changing up the length of the sessions can create a sense of surprise since your dog won't know exactly if this will be a "quick session" or a longer playtime.

Where do usually play with your dog? Bringing some enrichment toys along in the car (side note: this is a great way to keep them busy!) or to the vet can add variety and have the added benefit of distracting your dog.

By keeping things new and full of surprise you will keep your dog's brain working and keep things novel for them. If you need help, check out our Petite Paws Enrichment Box which delivers enrichment toys and treats right to your door every month!
