Why We Started

by Kaitlyn Hennessy on November 02, 2022

I am a small dog owner myself. I grew up with "larger" small dogs like Bichon Frises, but over the years I began fostering chihuahuas and suddenly had a host of under 10 pound dogs under foot.  The difference between my 15-20 pound dogs and these four pound friends was tremendous, but for some reason, almost everything I went to buy seemed to be for "small dogs- 25 pounds and under".

I don't need to tell you that the difference between a five pound and 25 pound dog is five fold!  The toys appropriate for a 25 pound dog will overwhelm most 5 pounders, and it makes sense- if you weighed 200 pounds you wouldn't expect a 40 pound child to use the same sized recreational gear, right? It's the same ratio of weight as our two dogs in the example!

As I learned more, I discovered that the challenges in our home can be very different for smaller pets.  Beds and sofas, for example, are much higher for a shorter pet, and those jumps down are much further and harder on their tiny bodies.  Balls made for most dogs can either be so cumbersome that our petite friends can injure their jaws, if they can even pick them up. Fencing in the backyard that is very safe for most dogs can be easily penetrated by many teeny pals. Treats, in particular, are often way too large for my dogs, and have to be broken up many times over.

My dogs aren't accessories. They are active members of our family, as many of your tiny dogs are too.  But as I went shopping for toys and treats and lifestyle items, I found it difficult to find what my dogs needed, so I created Bits and Paws. It's a way for you to get what your dog needs and wants on a monthly basis, so you don't have to worry about how to best spoil your dog.
