A Safe Thanksgiving for Your Petite Pup

by Kaitlyn Hennessy on November 20, 2022

Thanksgiving is upon us, and plenty of small dogs will be underfoot as turkeys fly out of the oven and guests drop pieces of pie.  How can you keep your small dog safe?

The first consideration will be if you are hosting this year's dinner. If you aren't, try to make plans for a friend or neighbor to check in on your dog if you'll be gone longer than normal.

If you are hosting, your first consideration is your small dog's safety with so many visitors. Is everyone used to dogs? Are there any small children who may be drawn to your dog whom they view as "their size"? Does everyone know to keep doors closed?

Before everyone arrives, try to take your dog for a walk or interact with them in a stimulating way.  Try a snuffle mat or other indoor games if the weather is inclement or time is limited. Is there a guest coming who loves your pup?  Ask them to help you out by hanging out with your dog, and to keep an eye on them.

Once the guests begin arriving, make sure that all doors and gates stay closed. If this will be difficult, confine your dog to a safe space or put up a baby gate to keep the pup in one part of the house. Once the guests have all arrived, let your dog out. If your dog is timid around strangers, encourage guests to give a safe treat that you have on hand.

Remember that not all guests have experience walking around small dogs, especially older family or friends. If this is the case, it might be safer for everyone if you keep your dog confined or assign a guest to help keep your dog occupied.

When it comes to food, no snacks from your lavish meal! Most dogs, especially small dogs, aren't going to be able to handle the spice and heavier fat content of the meal. Instead, find some snacks (we love Trader Joe's "Everything but the Leftovers" treats) that you can give to your dogs for the special day.

Thanksgiving is a special time for friends and family to come together, and there's no reason your petite pup can't join in the fun as long as you take some special precautions beforehand.

Happy Thanksgiving! Woof Woof!
